The Geotechnical investigation of the site for a new medical clinic in Coos Bay, Oregon revealed that the site was underlain by loose sands over buried coarse organics and organic soils. A majority of the organics consisted of logging slash consisting of large stumps and logs. The depth of organics below design floor grade was as much as 20-feet. The most cost effective foundation system was a micropile and grade beam system. Micropiles can be drilled and installed through just about any type of material, including large woody debris.
Services provided by K & A Engineering, Inc. included:
- The geotechnical site investigation and report
- Coordinating foundation alternative development with the project architect and owner,
- Design of the micropile/grade beam system,
- Quality assurance inspections of load testing and installation of the micropiles.
